INPEX CORPORATION has embarked on a pioneering initiative in Kashiwazaki, Japan, with the introduction of commissioning work for an integrated blue hydrogen and ammonia production and utilization demonstration project. This project represents a groundbreaking effort in Japan, focusing on clean energy sources like hydrogen and ammonia that do not emit CO2 during usage. The natural gas utilized is sourced from the company's Minami-Nagaoka Gas Field, with emitted CO2 being stored using CCUS technology to minimize environmental impact. The hydrogen generated will be used to produce electricity for local consumers, alongside the conversion of a portion into ammonia. The project's construction and commissioning process have been conducted in collaboration with various stakeholders since July 2023. INPEX plans to continue with auxiliary equipment commissioning, hydrogen production, and ammonia production facility commissioning before commencing demonstration operations in 2025. The initiative is supported by a subsidy program from NEDO, focusing on fuel ammonia production and utilization technologies. Furthermore, the project involves CO2 recovery and storage, part of a joint effort with JOGMEC to assess subsurface CO2 storage capacity, aiding in the decarbonization of natural gas utilization. INPEX's Vision 2035 aims for a responsible energy transition, setting growth pillars in lower-carbon solutions through CCS and hydrogen development. This project is a significant step toward realizing this vision, showcasing the company's commitment to sustainability and clean energy solutions.
