In a remarkable year for global sustainability innovation, startups from Singapore and Canada shone brightly at The Liveability Challenge. Krosslinker, based in Singapore, introduced a solution for passively cooling cities using a zero-energy aerogel coating, potentially reducing electricity costs by 10%. Additionally, Aryton from Canada presented a process to lower hydrogen storage and transportation costs by up to 50%, securing extra funding from venture capital firms. The competition, presented by Temasek Foundation and organized by Eco-Business, attracted a record-breaking 1,200 submissions from 100 countries. The focus this year was on decarbonisation and cool earth solutions to combat pressing sustainability issues. The two winning startups each received $1 million in funding to further develop their innovative ideas. Krosslinker plans to conduct large-scale pilots to demonstrate the effectiveness of their solution on various buildings, while Aryton aims to solidify its position in Singapore and Southeast Asia. The Liveability Challenge also highlighted other innovative solutions like D-CRBN's plasma-based carbon dioxide recycling, recognized as the most popular by the audience. Shortlisted entries included US-based SXD using AI to reduce emissions in garment production and New Zealand’s Cetogenix producing green ammonia from urban waste. The judging panel selected the winners based on the disruptive potential of their ideas and their ability to pitch to investors, emphasizing the importance of sustainable solutions in today's world of climate change and environmental challenges.
