European developers are showing strong interest in investing 68 billion euros in Colombian clean energy projects, as the country pushes to move away from fossil fuels. Energy Minister Edwin Palma highlighted that the investment includes 48 billion euros for clean hydrogen and 20 billion euros for non-conventional renewable power generation. The planned European investment for hydrogen involves 16 projects with a combined electrolysis potential of 19.8GW. Noteworthy projects include the Cartagena refinery H2 initiative and plans for producing green ammonia by Medellín-based Hevolución. The country's hydrogen roadmap faces challenges like high production costs, slow renewable energy development, financing difficulties, and demand uncertainty. Despite these hurdles, industry observers believe sustainable hydrogen can help Colombia decarbonize high-energy-demand sectors and diversify export markets. In the solar and wind power segments, European firms are eyeing opportunities in 175 projects to contribute 15.1GW to Colombia's energy capacity. However, administrative and regulatory delays have stalled 52% of renewable energy projects. Colombia currently operates 1.3GW of renewable energy, excluding hydroelectric plants, which represents only 6% of the total generation capacity. The country sees green hydrogen as a promising solution amid the slow pace of renewable energy development and aims to create a conducive environment for project development.
