France and Spain Join Forces for Groundbreaking Hydrogen Pipeline Project
Key Ideas
  • Natran, Terega, and Enagas collaborate on the Barmar project, aiming to connect Portugal, Spain, France, and Germany by 2030 with a cross-border hydrogen pipeline.
  • H2Med project plans to transport 2 million metric tons of renewable hydrogen annually, contributing to the EU's goal of reducing natural gas usage.
  • The European Union has approved funding for 50% of the project development costs, showcasing support for the transition to hydrogen-based energy.
  • Enagas CEO suggests the final investment decision on H2Med may not occur until 2028, highlighting the long-term nature of the ambitious hydrogen initiative.
French gas grid operator Natran, in collaboration with Terega and Spain's Enagas, has announced the creation of a joint venture to develop the Barmar project. This initiative is part of a larger 2.5 billion euro project known as H2Med, aimed at establishing a hydrogen pipeline connecting Portugal, Spain, France, and Germany by 2030. The pipeline, spanning from Barcelona to Marseille, is set to transport 2 million metric tons of hydrogen produced from renewable electricity each year, a significant contribution to the EU's hydrogen consumption targets for 2030. Enagas, Natran, and Terega will operate the Barmar project with ownership stakes of 50%, 33.3%, and 16.7%, respectively. The European Union's support for H2Med is evident as they have approved funding for half of the project development costs. Despite the ambitious goals, Enagas CEO Arturo Gonzalo has indicated that the final investment decision on H2Med is not expected before 2028, emphasizing the long-term vision required for this groundbreaking hydrogen infrastructure project.
