Australia's Renewable Gas Industry Advancement through NGERS Amendments
Key Ideas
  • Amendments to the NGERS scheme recognize the decarbonisation benefits of renewable gases like biomethane and hydrogen, shaping Australia's net-zero journey.
  • Jemena, a key player in the renewable gas sector, sees the amendments as crucial for developing the biomethane market and reducing Scope 1 emissions for businesses.
  • Australia's biomethane industry, though emerging, shows promise with Jemena's projects aiming to meet energy needs sustainably and create new job opportunities.
  • The potential growth of Australia's biomethane sector could significantly impact GDP, carbon emissions reduction, and job creation according to the Bioenergy Roadmap.
The National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Scheme (NGERS) in Australia has undergone amendments that will formally recognize the benefits of renewable gases such as biomethane and hydrogen in decarbonization efforts. Effective from 1 July 2025, the updated legislation introduces market-based reporting of emissions from the consumption of biomethane and hydrogen, along with other key updates related to renewable fuels, electricity consumption, and waste management. These changes aim to enhance clarity and compliance within the scheme while supporting Australia's emission reporting obligations. Jemena, a leading player in the renewable gas sector, has embraced these amendments, viewing them as a significant step towards establishing a robust renewable gas market. The General Manager of Renewable Gas at Jemena, Suzie Jakobovits, highlighted the importance of biomethane as a renewable gas that can seamlessly integrate with existing infrastructure and appliances, offering an effective solution for businesses to reduce their Scope 1 emissions. Jemena's active involvement in advancing Australia's biomethane industry is evident through projects like the biomethane network injection initiative in Malabar, Sydney. This project currently produces enough biomethane to meet the energy needs of thousands of customers, with agreements in place to expand production further. The company foresees that these collaborations could lead to supplying enough biomethane to fulfill the energy requirements of all their industrial customers, particularly in New South Wales. Despite being in the early stages in Australia, the biomethane industry is already showcasing its potential on a global scale, with countries like Denmark and Ireland setting ambitious sustainability targets. Australia's Bioenergy Roadmap indicates the substantial impact the biomethane sector could have on the economy, carbon emissions reduction, and job creation by 2030, emphasizing the promising future of renewable gases in the country's energy landscape.
