JCB, a leading construction equipment manufacturer, has praised a pivotal decision by the UK government to permit hydrogen diggers to operate on the country's roads. The UK Minister for the Future of Roads, Lilian Greenwood MP, signed a statutory instrument that will allow hydrogen-fuelled construction and agricultural machinery to be used on public highways starting April 29, 2025. This move was lauded by JCB's chairman, Anthony Bamford, who spearheaded a substantial £100 million initiative to develop hydrogen combustion engines for JCB's machinery, calling it a historic step forward. To celebrate this milestone, a hydrogen-powered JCB digger was driven on London's roads. Prior to this decision, hydrogen-fuelled construction and agricultural machinery were not authorized on UK roads. JCB has already been testing prototype hydrogen-powered equipment like Loadall telescopic handlers and backhoe loaders near Birmingham, while also partnering with rental companies and prominent contractors across the UK for further trials. This development aligns with the broader trend of promoting green technology and sustainable practices in the construction and agricultural sectors.
