Advancing Europe's Clean Hydrogen Corridor: H2med Consortium Milestone Achieved
Key Ideas
- The H2med consortium, consisting of CEOs from major energy companies in Spain, France, Portugal, and Germany, met with the European Commission to discuss progress on the H2med clean hydrogen corridor project.
- Grant agreements were signed for key projects within the H2med initiative, BarMar and CelZa, enabling the receipt of European funding under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) for Energy.
- The European funding, covering 100% of requested CEF funds and 50% of current project investment, will support infrastructure engineering, environmental impact studies, and permitting for the hydrogen corridor.
- The creation of the H2med Alliance and the support from multiple European countries and the European Commission demonstrate significant momentum towards achieving EU targets for decarbonisation and hydrogen consumption by 2030.
The Executive Vice-President for a Clean, Just and Competitive Transition at the European Commission, Teresa Ribera, held discussions with the CEOs of the H2med consortium to review the progress of the H2med clean hydrogen corridor project. The consortium, comprising Arturo Gonzalo from Enagás (Spain), Pierre Duvieusart from NaTran (France), Thomas Hüwener from OGE (Germany), Rodrigo Costa from REN (Portugal), and Carolle Foissaud from Teréga (France), emphasized the importance of supportive policies and ambitious targets for hydrogen projects to meet EU decarbonisation goals. The meeting highlighted the need for a clear regulatory framework to facilitate timely investment decisions. Recently, significant milestones were achieved with the signing of Grant Agreements for the BarMar and CelZa PCI projects, marking progress in securing funding for engineering studies and infrastructure development. The European funds allocated will drive forward key aspects of the H2med initiative, such as marine research, environmental assessments, and engineering phases. This development represents a substantial step in realizing the H2med project, which aims to establish a comprehensive hydrogen value chain across Europe. The project, initially presented by Portugal, Spain, and France, gained additional support from Germany, underscoring the collaborative effort among governments and industry players. The establishment of the H2med Alliance further strengthens the project's foundation, signaling a collective commitment to advancing sustainable hydrogen solutions and achieving strategic energy objectives in the region.
