Steel company Voestalpine and Austrian electricity supplier VERBUND are jointly investing €16.4 million in expanding the H2FUTURE hydrogen research project in Linz, Austria. This long-running project, based on PEM electrolysis technology, will now see the addition of new infrastructure for purification, compression, storage, and transportation of green hydrogen. Voestalpine is set to install a purification plant, compression system, and five hydrogen tanks at its site, with operations scheduled to start in January 2026. The research results are expected by the end of 2026, with project completion set for December 2029. Voestalpine plans to incorporate green hydrogen into its research programs, aligning with its greentec steel strategy to transition to environmentally friendly steel production, aiming for zero CO2 emissions by 2050. VERBUND will manage the hydrogen infrastructure to ensure a stable supply, even during production fluctuations. The project aims to pave the way for the industrial use of green hydrogen in Europe. Despite global economic challenges, Voestalpine reported solid financial results at the end of the 2024/25 financial year, indicating a positive outlook for the project and the companies involved.
