Key Ideas
  • Five optimal configuration scenarios of green hydrogen production at a renewable energy hub in Vietnam were analyzed using the HOMER optimization modeling program.
  • The most efficient system configuration involved a hybrid system of grid-connected wind and solar power, demonstrating favorable economic performance with low Levelized Cost of Electricity and Hydrogen.
  • The study provides a scientific basis for evaluating green hydrogen production projects, assisting policymakers in designing frameworks to promote hydrogen development in Vietnam.
  • Vietnam's hydrogen energy ecosystem is being developed to ensure energy security, green transportation, and achieve goals related to climate change and net zero emissions by 2050.
The study focuses on optimizing green hydrogen production at a renewable energy hub in Vietnam through the analysis of various system configurations. It highlights the importance of solar and wind power in global green hydrogen generation and the potential for Vietnam to become a key player in this sector. By utilizing the HOMER optimization modeling program, the research identifies the most efficient hydrogen production system configuration, involving a hybrid system of grid-connected wind and solar power. This configuration not only produces 300 kg of hydrogen per day but also allows for the sale of excess solar electricity to the national grid at a favorable tariff. The economic performance of this optimal system is highlighted by its low Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE), Levelized Cost of Hydrogen (LCOH), and Net Present Cost (NPC). The findings of the study provide valuable insights for evaluating the feasibility of green hydrogen projects and offer guidance for policymakers in designing supportive frameworks to boost hydrogen development in Vietnam's renewable energy hubs. With the Vietnamese government's push to promote the hydrogen industry and achieve net zero emissions by 2050, the study aligns with national goals related to energy security, green transportation, and climate change. Vietnam's rich potential for renewable energy, especially solar and wind power, positions the country as a promising player in the green hydrogen sector, with opportunities for export and participation in the international market.
