Avaada Group has been granted pre-certification to develop a green hydrogen and ammonia project in Gopalpur, Odisha, India, focusing on compliance with EU regulations. The project, initially announced in 2023, secured $1.8bn financing from REC Limited and aims to achieve a 500,000-tonne-per-year green ammonia production capacity. The certification awarded by TÜV Rheinland covers every aspect from production to transportation of green ammonia, ensuring lower lifecycle emissions compared to traditional fuels. Vineet Mittal, the Chairman of Avaada Group, highlighted the company's commitment to environmental excellence through adherence to stringent requirements like renewable energy usage and greenhouse gas emission intensity. This certification aligns with the EU's RED II rules, emphasizing renewable energy supply criteria and geographical matching. India, in line with its ambition to become a green hydrogen hotspot, targets producing five million tonnes by 2030, with a primary focus on exports and sustainability. The Avaada project signifies a step towards sustainable energy solutions, supported by TÜV Rheinland India's Vice-President, V Ravi Kumar, showcasing the positive impact of greenfield projects in the energy transition.
