Coal India Limited (CIL) is embarking on a significant foray into the renewable energy sector with plans to develop 4.5 gigawatts (GW) of green energy capacity, representing a strategic shift towards clean energy. Working in partnership with AM Green, the venture aims to produce five million tons of green ammonia annually by 2030. The partnership, formalized with a non-binding memorandum of understanding signed in Kolkata, signals a landmark move in India's green energy transition. CIL's diversified renewable portfolio includes setting up solar and wind projects in high-insolation states like Gujarat and Rajasthan, along with suitable regions in southern India. This approach capitalizes on India's renewable resources for optimal energy generation. Additionally, AM Green will implement pumped hydro storage systems to ensure a constant supply of green energy for ammonia production, addressing the intermittency of renewables. The collaboration not only signifies an industry shift towards sustainability but also positions CIL as a key player in India's green hydrogen and ammonia value chain.
