Collaboration for Green Iron and Hydrogen Production in Western Australia
Key Ideas
- Athena Resources collaborates with Warradarge Energy and Fenix Resources to expedite the Mid West Green Iron Project in Western Australia.
- Partners aim to produce green iron through locally sourced iron ore and green hydrogen to reduce carbon footprint in steel production.
- The project progresses through stages including validation, demonstration, and commercial production with support from the Australian Government's Green Iron Investment Fund.
- The collaboration allows Athena to enhance market value of iron products, expand export opportunities, and align with Australia's net zero goals by 2050.
Athena Resources, in partnership with Warradarge Energy and Fenix Resources, is moving forward with the Mid West Green Iron Project in Western Australia. The project aims to commercialize green iron by utilizing locally sourced iron ore and green hydrogen. The collaboration, under a memorandum of understanding, includes three stages: validation, demonstration, and commercial production. This initiative aligns with the Australian Government's push towards green iron production to meet net zero goals by 2050. The project, backed by the $1 billion Green Iron Investment Fund, is expected to validate its feasibility by late 2026. By utilizing green hydrogen and eliminating the need for coal, the project contributes to reducing carbon footprint in steel production. With a resource of 29.3 million tonnes of iron ore at its FE1 deposit, the project aims to produce high-grade iron products. The collaboration also leverages Fenix Resources' logistics solutions and Athena's iron ore production capabilities. Global iron ore supply is expected to increase, with Australia and Brazil leading the growth in export volumes. This collaboration not only enhances market value for Athena but also presents export opportunities while contributing to sustainable steel production.
