Colombia has made a significant breakthrough by identifying naturally occurring hydrogen, specifically white hydrogen, in its subsoil. This discovery, hailed by the energy ministry, has the potential to profoundly impact the country's energy landscape and position it as a leader in clean energy within Latin America. The discovery was made in exploratory wells, with the Macanal-1X well recording the highest hydrogen concentration. Other sources were found in wells situated in the Sinú-San Jacinto and Cordillera Oriental basins. Energy Minister Edwin Palma expressed optimism about the discovery, highlighting its capability to reshape the energy matrix, decrease reliance on fossil fuels, and drive development in historically marginalized areas. The studies conducted by the national hydrocarbons agency ANH will further evaluate the commercial viability of the resource. White hydrogen, formed naturally, is carbon-free and does not require industrial production, distinguishing it from gray, blue, or green hydrogen variants. Colombia's early advancements in producing commercial white hydrogen position it ahead in Latin America's efforts in this sector. The energy ministry's initiatives, including outlining guidelines for area allocation and planning exploration license auctions, underscore the country's commitment to leveraging this natural resource for sustainable energy production.
