Edmonton Launches First Mobile Hydrogen Fuelling Station in Alberta
Key Ideas
  • The City of Edmonton, in collaboration with various partners, has launched the first mobile hydrogen fuelling station in Alberta at the Ellerslie facility.
  • The Azolla Biodrome station produces hydrogen to service light-, medium-, and heavy-duty fleet vehicles, facilitating the piloting of hydrogen as a viable fuel option in real-world conditions.
  • The modular hydrogen fuelling system combines on-site hydrogen production with compression, storage, and dispensing systems, supporting the use of hydrogen fuel technologies in heavy-duty fleet vehicles.
  • The project, supported by partners and government funding, aims to expand hydrogen adoption in the region, with plans for a second fuelling station to be operational in Edmonton by 2026.
The City of Edmonton, in collaboration with partners in the Alberta Zero Emissions Fleet Fuelling (AZEFF) project, has inaugurated the first mobile hydrogen fuelling station in Alberta. Named the Azolla Biodrome, the station is situated at the city’s Fleet and Facility Services’ Ellerslie facility, providing hydrogen for light-, medium-, and heavy-duty fleet vehicles. This initiative allows Edmonton and its regional partners to further explore the use of hydrogen as a sustainable fuel source. The Azolla Biodrome functions as a modular hydrogen fuelling system, integrating on-site hydrogen production from methanol and deionized water with compression, storage, and dispensing capabilities. This mobile station, designed for mobility and reliability, stores hydrogen in 16 tanks with a capacity of 600 kilograms. The station will progressively cater to heavy-duty fleet vehicles, including semi-trucks and vocational vehicles from various counties. In partnership with entities like Strathcona County, Sturgeon County, and governmental organizations, the project received significant funding from Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA) to advance hydrogen adoption. The second mobile hydrogen fuelling station is slated to be operational by 2026, marking a continued commitment to testing and utilizing hydrogen fuel technologies. The project plans to run until 2027, followed by a comprehensive outcomes report. Edmonton's current hydrogen vehicle fleet comprises waste collection trucks, transit buses, and Toyota Mirai vehicles, with plans for additional conversions. The city remains dedicated to conducting pilot studies to assess the efficacy of hydrogen propulsion systems, emphasizing sustainability and innovation in transportation.
