DESFA and NOMAGAS JSC have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen their cooperation in the energy sector and advance regional energy interconnection in North Macedonia and Greece. The MoU builds on the existing relationship between the two companies dating back to 2016 for the Interconnector Greece – North Macedonia pipeline project, a 123 km pipeline that will enhance energy security in the region and support future hydrogen transport. This infrastructure project, expected to be completed by the first semester of 2026, will position Greece as an energy hub for Southeastern Europe. The partnership focuses on sustainable, secure, and efficient natural gas infrastructure development, aiming to promote cross-border synergies and integrate emerging technologies. The MoU underscores a commitment to long-term cooperation between DESFA and NOMAGAS, with a duration of ten years. Key stakeholders emphasized the importance of the signed MoU, highlighting its role in reinforcing energy security, diversification, and connectivity in the region. The partnership is seen as instrumental in supporting the transition to sustainable energy sources and strengthening the energy systems of North Macedonia and Greece. DESFA, as the National Natural Gas System Operator of Greece, plays a crucial role in the security and diversification of energy supply in the wider region. With a focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and contributing to international energy projects in Southeastern Europe, DESFA aims to build resilient infrastructure and promote a sustainable energy future for the region. NOMAGAS, on the other hand, is positioned to diversify North Macedonia's energy supply and support its energy transition. The partnership with DESFA is seen as strategically important in transporting natural gas and hydrogen to Western Balkans and Europe, enhancing energy systems and fostering greater energy security and integration in Southeastern Europe.
