GKN Aerospace has become a core partner in the ICEFlight R&D program, collaborating with Airbus to advance cryogenic technologies for hydrogen-powered flight. Operating under Airbus's Tech Hub in the Netherlands, the program aims to leverage cryogenic solutions for aircraft powertrains. The consortium, which includes Cryoworld, Stirling Cryogenics, Futura Composites, and various Dutch universities, will explore liquid hydrogen as a fuel and cold source for electrical system cooling. The focus is on integrating advanced electrical technologies, superconductivity, and hyperconductivity to enhance next-generation aircraft performance. GKN Aerospace's Chief Technology Officer, Russ Dunn, expressed pride in the partnership's potential to scale hydrogen systems into larger aircraft applications. The company will apply its previous experience in hydrogen systems and electrification to mature cryogenic technologies. The ICEFlight project's key innovations target cryogenic cooling systems and electrical networks to support superconductivity and hyperconductivity in aviation. The research framework and testing facilities planned in the Netherlands, led by the Dutch Government's NLR agency, will validate the performance and reliability of these new cryogenic systems. By focusing on technologies that enable improved electrical system performance in aviation, the project aims to support larger aircraft applications and potentially extend these advancements to other sectors.
