India-EU Collaboration: Combating Marine Plastic Pollution Through Green Hydrogen Innovation
Key Ideas
  • India and the EU are jointly investing Rs 391 crore to address marine plastic pollution and develop green hydrogen solutions.
  • Two projects, focusing on marine plastic litter and converting waste into green hydrogen, aim to mitigate pollutants and produce green hydrogen efficiently.
  • The initiatives align with India's National Green Hydrogen Mission and the EU's Hydrogen Strategy, demonstrating a commitment to sustainable energy solutions.
  • The India-EU Trade and Technology Council, with three working groups, focuses on green energy technologies, strategic technologies, and resilient value chains.
India and the European Union have initiated two research projects to combat marine plastic pollution and explore innovative ways to transform waste into green hydrogen. The total investment in these projects amounts to Rs 391 crore or 41 million euros, jointly funded by both parties. The Marine Plastic Litter Project, funded by the Union Ministry of Earth Science and Horizon Europe, aims to develop technologies to monitor and mitigate pollutants in the sea, including microplastics and heavy metals. On the other hand, the Waste to Green Hydrogen Project, supported by the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy and Horizon Europe, focuses on creating environmentally friendly methods for green hydrogen production. These initiatives align with the goals of India's National Green Hydrogen Mission and the EU's Hydrogen Strategy, emphasizing sustainability and clean energy solutions. Additionally, the establishment of the India-EU Trade and Technology Council in February 2023 showcases a commitment to collaboration in green and clean energy technologies, strategic technologies, and resilient value chains.
