CPS Energy has embarked on a partnership with Modern Hydrogen to explore a groundbreaking project that involves converting natural gas into clean hydrogen using methane pyrolysis technology. The project, spearheaded in San Antonio, Texas, aims to utilize Modern Hydrogen's MH500 units, which can yield approximately 500 kg of hydrogen per day onsite. This clean hydrogen can be used for various purposes such as power generation, fueling fuel cell vehicles, or blending with natural gas systems. Unlike traditional methods like steam methane reforming, Modern Hydrogen's approach focuses on extracting solid carbon from natural gas at the point of use, thereby preventing CO₂ emissions. The company's CEO, Tony Pan, highlighted the efficiency of the process, which produces clean heat needed to run pyrolysis without an external supply of electricity. Furthermore, by reusing existing infrastructure instead of building new hydrogen pipelines, the project aims to overcome challenges related to scaling hydrogen use in power generation. This approach has garnered positive attention, with investments from notable entities like Bill Gates, NextEra Energy, and National Grid. In addition to the San Antonio project, Modern Hydrogen is conducting smaller-scale pilots in Florida and Oregon, focusing on clean power generation and blending hydrogen into natural gas distribution systems, respectively.
