INPEX Corp. has launched commissioning work at its innovative blue hydrogen and ammonia production project in Kashiwazaki City, Niigata Prefecture, Japan. This pioneering initiative integrates the entire process of hydrogen and ammonia production and utilization, using domestically sourced natural gas from the Minami-Nagaoka Gas Field, supported by carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technology. The project focuses on mitigating environmental impact by capturing and storing carbon dioxide, aligning with Japan's decarbonization goals.
The hydrogen produced will be used for generating electricity locally and converting a portion into ammonia for further distribution, demonstrating a circular and community-focused approach. Construction on the plant facilities was completed after close collaboration with local stakeholders, ensuring transparency and engagement.
Supported by NEDO subsidies, the project aims for full-scale operations by fall 2025, with CO2 injection into designated reservoirs starting at that time. Additionally, financial backing from JOGMEC facilitates CO2 storage evaluation in domestic oil and gas fields for long-term storage purposes.
This endeavor is part of INPEX's sustainability strategy, emphasizing carbon capture and hydrogen-based solutions, as outlined in its 'INPEX Vision @ 2025.' The company, known for its global E&P projects, is dedicated to delivering energy responsibly, focusing on environmental responsibility and exploring new opportunities in the evolving energy sector.
