Jeju Island in South Korea is embarking on a groundbreaking project to introduce the first urban railway, known as the 'Hydrogen Tram'. This initiative aims to address urban traffic challenges and promote sustainability by leveraging hydrogen-based eco-friendly transportation methods. The project, which includes a 12.91km route connecting key locations such as Jeju Port, Dongmun Market, Jeju International Airport, and more, is expected to cost approximately 529.3 billion won, with a significant portion financed by the national government. To gather public feedback and ensure community involvement, a public hearing is scheduled to provide residents with the opportunity to contribute to the urban railway network construction plan. The success of the hydrogen tram project is hinged on the active engagement of Jeju's residents, as highlighted by Kim Tae-wan, director of Jeju Island's Transportation and Aviation Bureau. The completion of the urban railway network is anticipated in the second half of the year, with plans to kickstart commercialization efforts in the following year.
