Mauritania's Energy Revolution: Embracing Privatization and Green Hydrogen Innovation
Key Ideas
  • Mauritania is transitioning to a fully privatized power generation model, with new independent power plants fueled by domestic gas contributing 550 MW to the national grid.
  • The country aims to achieve full energy access by 2030, utilizing gas from the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim project to play a key role in the power sector transformation.
  • Mauritania is positioning itself as a leader in green hydrogen projects, with the potential to produce 12 million tons of green hydrogen per year and catalyze industrialization while decarbonizing sectors.
  • The government has modernized regulatory frameworks, opened the energy sector to private investments, introduced new policies to support local content, and implemented green hydrogen codes to attract investors.
Mauritania is undergoing a significant energy revolution, shifting towards a fully privatized power generation model to enhance industrialization and inclusive growth. The Minister of Petroleum and Energy announced at the Invest in African Energy 2025 Forum in Paris that all new power generation projects in Mauritania will be private, excluding state-owned companies. Two upcoming Independent Power Producer (IPP) projects will be fueled by domestic gas, adding 550 MW to the national grid. The country, aiming for full energy access by 2030, plans to utilize gas from the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim project to drive this transition. Mauritania is also focusing on green hydrogen projects, with ambitions to produce 12 million tons of green hydrogen annually, supporting industrialization and decarbonization. To attract investments, the government has modernized regulatory frameworks, introduced local content policies, and implemented green hydrogen codes. The vision includes expanding the BirAllah gas field, further developing the GTA project, cross-border electricity trade, and enhancing the mining sector.
