Oman's Renewable Energy Expansion: Wind Projects and Energy Storage Initiatives
Key Ideas
  • Oman plans to announce its first renewable energy storage project as part of efforts to expand clean energy capacity and reduce reliance on traditional power sources.
  • The country is set to launch five to six new wind and solar projects in 2021, focusing on wind power in areas like Al Wusta and Dhofar, with an expected electricity generation of over 2,000MW by 2027.
  • The renewable energy projects align with Oman Vision 2040, targeting 30% of total electricity generation from renewable sources by 2030, with existing solar plants and plans for a hydrogen corridor to support the transition.
  • Collaboration between government entities like the Ministry of Energy and Minerals, Nama Group, and others is paving the way for a sustainable energy future and potential growth in clean energy industries.
Oman is making significant strides in its renewable energy sector, with plans to introduce its first renewable energy storage project in the near future. The Minister of Energy and Minerals, H E Salem bin Nasser al Aufi, confirmed the upcoming launch of five to six new wind and solar projects this year, emphasizing wind power due to the country's favorable conditions in this area. These projects are projected to generate over 2,000MW of electricity by 2027, contributing to Oman's clean energy goals. Specifically, the wind projects will be situated in Al Wusta and Dhofar regions, identified through long-term wind measurements to have significant generation potential. The Ministry of Energy and Minerals, along with key partners, is exploring energy storage solutions to support these initiatives, with a focus on both traditional and emerging technologies. Oman's Vision 2040 includes targets for renewable energy to account for 30% of total electricity generation by 2030. To achieve this, the country has already launched the Manah 1 and Manah 2 solar plants, collectively adding around 1,000MW of capacity. Additionally, efforts are underway to establish a hydrogen corridor in collaboration with other ministries and organizations, aiming to facilitate hydrogen production and supply stations in concession areas to fuel trucks. The ongoing collaboration between various government bodies and industry stakeholders highlights Oman's commitment to a sustainable energy transition and the potential for the development of clean energy-driven industries in the country.
