NEOM's Green Hydrogen Project on Track for 2026 Completion
Key Ideas
- NEOM's green hydrogen project in progress, targeting 4 GW of solar and wind power generation by mid-2026.
- Construction update reveals 80% completion across all sites, including key equipment installations like electrolysers and wind turbines.
- NGHC's world-scale plant aims to produce 600 tonnes per day of carbon-free hydrogen by 2026, with a 30-year off-take agreement in place.
- Financial close of $8.4 billion secured in May 2023, with significant support from local, regional, and international banks.
The NEOM Green Hydrogen Company (NGHC) is making significant progress on its green hydrogen project, with a target to complete 4 gigawatts of solar and wind power generation by mid-2026. The project will then move on to commissioning electrolysers, with the first ammonia production expected in 2027. The company recently provided a construction update, indicating that 80% of the construction work has been completed at various sites, including the green hydrogen facility, wind garden, solar farm, and transmission grid. Milestone equipment like wind turbines, hydrogen storage vessels, electrolysers, the cold box, and pipe rack are now being installed. The joint venture between ACWA Power, Air Products, and NEOM is set to integrate the renewable energy sources to produce up to 600 tonnes per day of carbon-free hydrogen by the end of 2026, in the form of green ammonia. NGHC has secured a 30-year off-take agreement with Air Products for the green ammonia produced. In a significant milestone, the project achieved a financial close of $8.4 billion in May 2023, with a $6.1 billion non-recourse loan from a consortium of 23 banks and financial institutions. The project's progress reflects a positive outlook towards sustainable energy production and marks a significant step towards reducing carbon emissions in the region.
