The Ontario government, based in Etobicoke, has unveiled its ambitious plan to further harness the power of hydrogen for a clean energy future. The province is taking concrete steps to ensure affordable and sustainable energy for new homes and to bolster economic growth. This initiative includes various measures such as the creation of a new hydrogen interruptible rate pilot program to incentivize hydrogen producers to reduce consumption during peak demand periods. Additionally, the province is exploring options to regulate hydrogen pipelines through the Ontario Energy Board to protect consumers and facilitate infrastructure development. Furthermore, an expanded Hydrogen Innovation Fund with a $30 million funding round will support projects integrating low-carbon hydrogen into the electricity grid and advancing the use of hydrogen in transportation and heavy industry. Minister of Energy and Mines, Stephen Lecce, highlighted the importance of leveraging hydrogen as a key tool in achieving a self-reliant and sovereign energy future. The government aims to deliver affordable Canadian-made energy while reducing dependence on foreign sources. Projections by Natural Resources Canada indicate that transitioning to a hydrogen economy could lead to the creation of up to 135,000 jobs by 2050 in various sectors including production, infrastructure, storage, and clean technology development. Additionally, the utilization of hydrogen has the potential to significantly reduce emissions, with estimations suggesting it could eliminate as much as 69 megatonnes of emissions annually.
