PyroGenesis Inc.'s subsidiary, Pyro Green-Gas Inc., has successfully finalized a groundbreaking project worth US$9.3 million for Tata Steel in Kalinganagar, India. This project involved the purification of coke-oven gas (COG) and the production of hydrogen to an exceptionally high purity level. The initiative focused on extracting hydrogen and other harmful gases from the blast furnace process, then processing and cleaning them to obtain hydrogen with a purity of 99.999%. The systems developed by Pyro Green-Gas are now fully operational 24 hours a day at the Tata Steel facility, where the reformed hydrogen is being utilized for other applications, ultimately enhancing production efficiency and environmental outcomes. This project aligns with Tata Steel's circular production goals and cost reduction programs. The President and CEO of PyroGenesis, P. Peter Pascali, highlighted the collaborative efforts with Tata Steel to tailor a solution for one of the world's largest steel facilities, integrating advanced technologies like water-injected compressors to ensure sustainability in steelmaking. The project addresses the need for effective COG cleaning and valorisation in the steel industry, with Pyro Genesis anticipating significant impacts as more steel plants adopt the concept. The technology developed by Pyro Green-Gas has the capacity to purify 32,000 m3 of COG per hour and extract 620 m3 of hydrogen per hour, underscoring the potential of their solutions in the global steel sector. PyroGenesis' innovative approach to coke oven gas cleaning forms part of the company's holistic solution ecosystem, aligning with economic drivers crucial for the heavy industry on a global scale.
