Singleton Birch, a part of MLC, has entered into a partnership with Centrica Energy Storage Ltd to produce hydrogen fuel for low-carbon lime production at their facility in North Lincolnshire, UK. This collaboration has been shortlisted for funding under the UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero's Hydrogen Allocation Round 2 (HAR2) initiative. The project is a significant step towards reducing the environmental impact of lime production, a crucial element for various industries. Through the integration of green hydrogen into their lime kiln operations, Singleton Birch aims to decrease carbon emissions and lower their reliance on natural gas. The hydrogen plant, to be constructed by Centrica, is expected to be operational by 2028, using electrolysis to convert water into hydrogen and oxygen. This plant will provide 20% of the energy required for the lime kilns, leading to a substantial reduction in natural gas consumption. The overall objective of the HAR2 initiative is to advance low-carbon hydrogen projects throughout the UK, supporting decarbonization, economic growth, and energy security. Singleton Birch's technical director highlighted the importance of new technologies, legislation, and infrastructure in achieving carbon neutrality, emphasizing the role of partnerships like the one with Centrica and government support in meeting climate goals. MLC has made significant investments in projects aimed at reducing emissions, energy usage, and waste, including the development of an eco-park at their quarry site and the upgrade of anaerobic digesters for renewable bioenergy production. Looking ahead, MLC is exploring carbon capture technology, with a project in negotiation with the US Department of Energy, potentially offering insights applicable on an international scale. Through these endeavors, Singleton Birch demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainable practices, bioenergy, and green hydrogen integration to lessen their carbon footprint and contribute to broader decarbonization efforts in the UK and beyond.
