TotalEnergies H2 has announced an ambitious green hydrogen project in Chile's Magallanes region named H2 Magallanes. The project, with a planned investment of US$16.0bn, aims to produce green ammonia for applications such as fertilizer feedstock and fuel. The project is expected to start construction in early 2027 and begin operations by the end of 2030, adding to Chile's growing green hydrogen sector. The environmental impact study for the project marks the initial phase, with a subsequent expansion planned. To overcome challenges in production costs, offtake agreements, and regulatory hurdles, TotalEnergies H2 is focusing on efficient operations and developing a robust value chain. The project includes wind parks, gas-fired power plants, hydrogen production centers, ammonia plants, desalination facilities, and port terminals. Additionally, several other green hydrogen projects like HNH Energy, INNA, and Volta are also in various stages of development in Chile. With over 70 green hydrogen projects in the country, Chile is positioning itself as a key player in the global green energy transition. The industry is undergoing a "cleaning" process to ensure only the most feasible and sustainable projects proceed, fostering long-term growth and technological advancements in the green hydrogen sector.
