UK Power Networks Leading the Way in Energy Innovation for a Sustainable Future
Key Ideas
  • UK Power Networks (UKPN) has secured funding for four innovative energy projects through Ofgem’s Strategic Innovation Fund.
  • One of the projects, Hot Chips, aims to reuse waste heat from data centers to warm homes and reduce heating emissions.
  • Another project, SHARED, investigates the use of locally produced hydrogen to provide backup power in rural areas, boosting resilience and cutting carbon.
  • These projects align with UKPN's goal of enabling the transition to a low-carbon, more flexible energy system.
UK Power Networks (UKPN) has recently announced the successful funding of four groundbreaking energy projects as part of Ofgem's Strategic Innovation Fund. Among these projects is Hot Chips, which focuses on repurposing waste heat from data centers to heat homes efficiently. By exploring how excess low-grade heat can enhance heat pump performance and be stored for flexible demand, the project aims to reduce heating emissions and alleviate strain on the grid. Another significant project, SHARED (Smart Hydrogen and Resilient Energy Delivery), is looking into the potential of locally produced hydrogen to act as a backup power source in rural regions. Through the generation of hydrogen during periods of low demand, the system could provide support to households and critical infrastructure such as water pumping stations. This initiative not only enhances resilience but also contributes to carbon reduction efforts. Luca Grella, the head of innovation at UKPN, expressed optimism about these projects, emphasizing their role in furthering the transition to a sustainable, low-carbon energy system. By embracing innovation and sustainable practices, UK Power Networks aims to lead the way in creating a more resilient and environmentally friendly electricity network for the future.
