Andritz, a technology group, has recently launched an electrolyzer gigafactory in Erfurt, Germany, aimed at advancing green hydrogen production. The facility, designed with an initial annual capacity of 1 GW, operates within a historical industrial site, facilitating the manufacturing and transportation of electrolyzers. Since March 2025, key components for green hydrogen production have been manufactured at the site, with the flexibility to increase output based on market demands. Andritz's CEO, Joachim Schönbeck, highlighted the company's goal to provide innovative and economically viable solutions, leveraging Erfurt's infrastructure and long-standing expertise in heavy machinery construction. The project received commendation from Mario Voigt, the Prime Minister of Thuringia, who praised the initiative for its contribution to value creation and future stability in the region. Voigt emphasized the multifaceted role of hydrogen as an energy carrier, storage system, and catalyst for industrial rejuvenation. All green hydrogen products produced in Erfurt are reportedly CE-certified, meeting European safety and performance standards. Furthermore, Andritz has secured an engineering order from REPCO for a 100 MW green hydrogen plant in Rostock, Germany. This plant is set to play a crucial role in supplying Germany's hydrogen core network and the European hydrogen backbone infrastructure while serving local industries and the mobility sector. The move by Andritz signifies a positive step towards sustainable energy practices and aligns with the goals of advancing renewable energy sources within the European energy market.
