Spain Boosts Renewable Hydrogen Economy with 794 Million Investment in Industrial Projects
Key Ideas
  • The Spanish Government allocates 794 million euros to seven renewable hydrogen industrial projects, promoting the transition towards a green economy.
  • Projects in Andalusia, Aragon, Asturias, Castilla-La Mancha, the Basque Country, and the Region of Murcia will contribute to generating 652 MW of electrolysis capacity.
  • This investment aims to replace fossil fuels with renewable hydrogen in industries, heavy transport, and hard-to-decarbonize sectors, reducing CO2 emissions and fostering industrial competitiveness.
  • The initiative, supported by the European Commission, will mobilize over 6 billion euros in investments throughout its lifespan, promoting the use of green hydrogen in various industrial applications.
The Spanish Government has approved a Royal Decree to allocate 794 million euros in direct aid to seven industrial projects focused on renewable hydrogen within the framework of the IPCEI Hy2Use. These projects will add 652 MW of electrolysis capacity, powered by solar, wind, and hydraulic energy sources. The selected projects in Spain, endorsed by the European Commission, aim to establish hydrogen valleys and innovative industrial applications in different regions of the country. The investments will facilitate the transition to renewable hydrogen, aiming to eliminate CO2 emissions from industrial activities, heavy transport, and sectors challenging to decarbonize. Projects in Andalusia, Aragon, Asturias, Castilla-La Mancha, the Basque Country, and the Region of Murcia will play a crucial role in promoting green hydrogen and advancing the renewable energy sector. The funding, channeled through NextGenEU funds, will be managed by the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving. The initiative envisions the construction of high-capacity electrolysers in industrial zones, aiming to replace fossil fuels with green hydrogen in various applications. The projects are expected to generate over 6 billion euros in investments throughout their lifespan, enhancing Spain's position in the global renewable energy market. The integration of renewable hydrogen production into industrial clusters will enable the decarbonization of high-impact processes, substituting gray hydrogen with green hydrogen derived from renewable sources. The projects are projected to replace a significant amount of fossil hydrogen with renewable molecules, contributing to the country's decarbonization goals and fostering industrial competitiveness.
