EET Fuels Advancing Towards Carbon Neutrality with Hydrogen-Ready Furnace Installation at Stanlow Refinery
Key Ideas
  • EET Fuels has installed a hydrogen-ready furnace at the Stanlow refinery in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, aimed at reducing carbon emissions and improving energy efficiency.
  • The furnace will transition to using 100% low-carbon hydrogen by 2028, aligning with EET Fuel's goal to eliminate 95% of its carbon emissions by 2030.
  • The new furnace will significantly reduce NOX emissions, enhance air quality, and cut CO2 emissions by 16,600 tonnes with conventional fuel and 200,000 tons when powered by low-carbon hydrogen.
  • Deepak Maheshwari, CEO of EET Fuels, views the installation as a major milestone in their decarbonisation strategy, emphasizing the significant environmental benefits it brings.
EET Fuels has achieved a significant milestone in its journey towards carbon neutrality by successfully installing a hydrogen-ready furnace at the Stanlow refinery in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire. This innovative furnace, which can operate on a blend of refinery off gas (ROG) and hydrogen fuel, or 100% hydrogen, is a crucial step in EET Fuels' strategy to reduce carbon emissions. By 2028, the furnace is set to run entirely on 100% low-carbon hydrogen, sourced from EET Hydrogen’s HPP1 plant, the UK’s first large-scale low carbon hydrogen production facility. This transition aligns with EET Fuel's ambitious target to eliminate 95% of its carbon emissions by 2030. The installation of the hydrogen-ready furnace not only boosts the refinery's energy efficiency but also significantly contributes to environmental improvements. It is projected to reduce NOX emissions, enhance air quality, and cut CO2 emissions by approximately 16,600 tonnes when using conventional ROG fuel, and a substantial 200,000 tons when fueled by low-carbon hydrogen. Additionally, the new furnace, which replaces three existing units, will account for around 10% of the Stanlow refinery's total energy usage. Deepak Maheshwari, the CEO of EET Fuels, emphasized the importance of this installation in their decarbonisation strategy. He highlighted the immediate and long-term benefits the new furnace brings in terms of reducing CO2 emissions. Maheshwari views this achievement as a crucial step towards achieving their sustainability goals and underlined the environmental advantages that come with transitioning to low-carbon hydrogen as a primary fuel source. Overall, the installation of the hydrogen-ready furnace signifies a major advancement for EET Fuels in their commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable operations.
