Lotte SK Eneroot Corp., a joint venture between SK gas Ltd., Lotte Chemical Corp., and Air Liquide Korea Co., has successfully commenced commercial operations of its first hydrogen fuel cell power plant in Ulsan. The Ulsan Hydrogen Power No. 2 is a 20-megawatt facility that receives a steady supply of byproduct hydrogen from SK gas and Lotte Chemical affiliates. This plant is projected to generate approximately 160 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity annually over the next two decades, which can power approximately 40,000 households each year. Situated in Ulsan, a region with high power demand, the plant aims to offer a reliable source of eco-friendly electricity. Noteworthy is the plant's hydrogen-exclusive model, ensuring zero carbon emissions and setting it apart from traditional power facilities. Additionally, the facility is designed to smoothly transition to clean hydrogen in the future without necessitating significant modifications. An added advantage of this plant is its capability to capture and reuse waste heat from the fuel cells for generating additional power, enhancing overall efficiency. SK gas CEO Yoon Byung-suk hailed the launch of the Ulsan plant as a significant step in realizing the hydrogen economy. Lotte Chemical CEO Lee Young-jun emphasized the project's importance as a milestone in Lotte Chemical's commitment to a sustainable future, highlighting the company's dedication to strengthening hydrogen value chain capabilities.
