- Orica's commitment to sustainable manufacturing aligns with the project's goal of offering low-carbon products, decarbonizing industrial processes, and fostering collaboration for a greener future.
Australia-based Orica has been conditionally awarded AUD 432 million under ARENA’s Hydrogen Headstart program to support its proposed Hunter Valley Hydrogen Hub. The funding aims to provide partial revenue support for the project, once operational, to accelerate the development of Australia’s hydrogen industry. The HVHH, located in Newcastle, will produce renewable hydrogen for low-carbon ammonia and ammonium nitrate, gradually replacing natural gas feedstock. The first phase is expected to produce 12 tonnes of renewable hydrogen per day, reducing Orica's natural gas demand and emissions. This initiative aligns with Orica's sustainable manufacturing commitment and aims to create jobs, contribute to regional decarbonisation, and support economic growth. Orica's CEO highlighted the importance of cost-competitive renewable resources and collaboration with stakeholders for successful project execution. ARENA CEO emphasized the role of renewable hydrogen in decarbonising heavy industry and creating new export opportunities. Orica is exploring partnerships to finalize the investment decision. The project marks progress towards sustainable manufacturing and decarbonization in Australia.
