Sarawak's Autonomous Rapid Transit Project Progress Update
Key Ideas
  • No additional costs incurred by Sarawak government despite slight delay in the autonomous rapid transit project implementation.
  • Contractors must adhere to mitigation plans for any delays in the project to avoid additional costs.
  • ART system in Sarawak aims to address public transportation issues using driverless tram-like coaches powered by hydrogen fuel cells.
  • First phase of the project to cover a 52km-route through Kuching, with operations expected to begin next year.
The state transport minister of Sarawak, Lee Kim Shin, mentioned in the state assembly that despite a minor delay in Sarawak's autonomous rapid transit (ART) project, no extra costs have been incurred by the state government. Contractors are required to submit mitigation plans for any delays to prevent additional expenses. The ART system, chosen by the Sarawak government to improve public transportation, will utilize driverless tram-like coaches running on rubber tires and powered by hydrogen fuel cells. The first phase of the project, covering a 52km-route in Kuching, is anticipated to be finished by the end of 2025, with operations set to commence next year. The ART vehicles will operate on dedicated trackless lanes at street level, each capable of carrying up to 300 passengers at speeds of up to 70 km/h. Although there have been delays, the project remains on track without exceeding its budget, providing hope for a modern and efficient public transportation solution for Sarawak.
