EET Fuels Commissions UK's First Hydrogen-Ready Furnace at Stanlow Refinery
Key Ideas
  • EET Fuels has commissioned the UK's first hydrogen-ready furnace at Stanlow, aiming to cut CO2 emissions by 16,600 tonnes annually using refinery off gas.
  • This new furnace, capable of running on different fuel blends, will further reduce emissions by 200,000 tonnes once fueled by low-carbon hydrogen from EET Hydrogen's HPP1 plant.
  • The commissioning marks a crucial step in EET Fuels' decarbonisation strategy to eliminate 95% of its carbon emissions by the end of the decade, with a total investment of USD 1.2 billion over five years.
  • The HPP1 hydrogen production plant, part of the company's broader plan, is set to supply low-carbon hydrogen to Stanlow refinery through the Liverpool Bay CO2 transport and storage system.
Essar Energy Transition’s (EET) UK arm, EET Fuels, has announced the commissioning of the UK's first hydrogen-ready furnace at its Stanlow refinery. This furnace, replacing three older units, is anticipated to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 16,600 tonnes annually using refinery off gas. Once fully fueled with low-carbon hydrogen from EET Hydrogen's HPP1 plant, estimated emissions savings could reach 200,000 tonnes per year. The furnace is a key component in EET Fuels' roadmap to eliminate 95% of its carbon emissions by 2030, with investments totaling USD 1.2 billion over five years. The HPP1 hydrogen production plant, nearing completion at the HyNet industrial decarbonisation cluster, will provide low-carbon hydrogen to Stanlow through the Liverpool Bay CO2 transport and storage system. EET Fuels' CEO, Deepak Maheshwari, emphasized the significance of this milestone in reducing CO2 emissions and paving the way for greater sustainability. The upgraded furnace not only improves emissions but also enhances energy efficiency and air quality at the refinery site, showcasing a commitment to environmental stewardship.
