EET Fuels' Path to Decarbonization: Hydrogen-Ready Furnace Installation at Stanlow Refinery
Key Ideas
  • Replacing three existing furnaces at Stanlow with a hydrogen-ready furnace will reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 16,600 tonnes per year.
  • Full fuel switching to low-carbon hydrogen by 2028 is expected to save around 200,000 tonnes of CO2 annually, contributing to EET Fuels' goal of eliminating 95% of its carbon emissions by 2030.
  • The new furnace's operation on 100% hydrogen or a blend of refinery off gas and hydrogen will significantly enhance the Stanlow site's air quality, reduce NOX emissions, and improve energy efficiency.
  • EET Fuels' CEO highlighted the significance of the new furnace in achieving immediate and long-term CO2 emissions reductions, marking a key milestone in the company's decarbonization strategy.
EET Fuels, a trading name of Essar Oil (UK) Ltd, has completed the installation and connection of a hydrogen-ready furnace at its Stanlow site in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire. The furnace, operational from August 2022, can use refinery off gas, a blend of off gas and hydrogen, or 100% hydrogen, aiming for full fuel switching to low-carbon hydrogen by 2028. This move is part of EET Fuels' plan to eliminate 95% of its carbon emissions by 2030. The new furnace replacing three existing ones will significantly reduce CO2 emissions and improve air quality at the Stanlow site. EET Fuels' Chief Executive Officer emphasized the importance of this milestone in their decarbonization strategy. EET Fuels is investing in decarbonizing operations, targeting a 95% emissions cut by 2030 through energy efficiency, carbon capture, and fuel switching to low-carbon hydrogen. This move aligns with the company's commitment to playing a key role in the UK's decarbonization and establishing an energy transition cluster in North West England. The investment in industrial carbon capture and hydrogen fuel switching is set to deliver substantial annual emissions reductions, supporting the sustainability of the UK's industrial decarbonization cluster at HyNet.
