The Indian government has kickstarted five pilot projects to integrate hydrogen into buses and trucks as part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission. These projects, overseen by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, will involve a total of 37 vehicles and 9 hydrogen refuelling stations. The vehicles, which comprise both hydrogen fuel cell-based and internal combustion engine-based models, will operate on 10 different routes spanning various cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kochi, and Visakhapatnam. Major companies such as TATA Motors, Reliance Industries, and NTPC have been entrusted with the implementation of these projects, with a total government financial support of approximately Rs 208 crore. The objective is to drive the adoption of green hydrogen as a clean fuel in buses and trucks, laying the groundwork for future scalability of such technologies in India. The National Green Hydrogen Mission, initiated with an allocation of Rs 19,744 crore up to FY 2029-30, aims to support the development of commercially viable hydrogen utilization technologies in the transport sector.
