John G Russell Transport is currently involved in a government project aimed at accelerating the decarbonisation of the transport sector. As part of the Zero Emission HGV and Infrastructure Demonstrator (ZEHID) programme, the company, through ZENFreight, is trialling both hydrogen fuel cell and battery electric lorries. This initiative includes the use of three MAN eHGVs and three hydrogen electric Scania HFCEVs in a 6x2 configuration, representing a significant step forward in the adoption of alternative fuel technologies in the country. Russell is also joining a consortium's network to establish electric charging infrastructure at depots and is installing hydrogen storage and filling facilities at its Coatbridge depot. The project involves other key players such as Gregory Distribution, Maritime Transport, DFDS, and truck manufacturers like DAF, Daimler, Scania, and Volvo. Russell's commitment to sustainable logistics and reducing environmental impact is evident in their participation, with a focus on innovation and technology. The company aims to achieve net zero emissions by 2040, demonstrating a long-term commitment to sustainability and responsible supply chain management.
