With a high unemployment rate and a focus on economic diversification, young Namibians are actively engaging in the green hydrogen sector to boost their careers and skills. The country has made significant progress in green hydrogen infrastructure, including the establishment of the Green Hydrogen Council, pilot fuel stations, and talent mapping initiatives like the Hyphen Hydrogen Skills Census. Green hydrogen, produced through the electrolysis of water using solar or wind power, offers a carbon-free energy solution that can be stored and transported, making it a versatile tool for decarbonizing various industries. Namibia's plans include using green hydrogen to produce green ammonia, expand steel production, and power off-grid areas, offering cleaner energy access and potential job creation. The country aims to leverage green hydrogen to address energy inequality and become a global leader in a 21st-century industry. However, to maximize the benefits, Namibia needs to focus on establishing strong regulatory frameworks, expediting key legislation, and implementing clear ESG standards.
