Costain Leading the Way in Underground Hydrogen Storage
Key Ideas
- Costain to design a groundbreaking underground hydrogen storage facility in Northwich, Cheshire, consisting of 19 salt caverns and various treatment facilities.
- The project aims to store a significant volume of hydrogen, enhance the UK's energy resilience, and support economic growth in the North-west of England.
- Two front-end engineering and design contracts will be delivered to enable the storage of hydrogen from the proposed HyNet system, contributing to decarbonization efforts in the region.
- Costain's expertise in gas storage facilities and established relationships with the local supply chain will play a crucial role in the successful completion of the project by 2026.
Costain has been selected by Storengy UK to design the Keuper Gas Storage Project (KGSP), an underground hydrogen storage facility in Northwich, Cheshire. This pioneering project will feature 19 salt caverns along with hydrogen treatment, compression, dehydration, and transfer facilities. The facility is designed to store a working gas volume of approximately 400 million cubic metres of hydrogen, aiming to store 1,300 gigawatt hours of hydrogen.
The first front-end engineering and design (FEED) contract will focus on solution mining, which involves pumping water underground to dissolve salt and create caverns. The second FEED contract will address the gas storage facilities necessary for receiving hydrogen from the HyNet system, covering transportation, compression, and storage within the caverns before returning it to the system.
Costain's expertise in gas storage facilities and its successful track record in the field position the company well to complete the project by 2026. The project is expected to support the UK's energy resilience and economic development in the North-west of England, contributing to decarbonization efforts in the region. Storengy UK's hydrogen director emphasized the project's significance in decarbonizing industry and energy generation in the Northwest, highlighting the collaborative effort involving various stakeholders to ensure the project's success.
