Edmonton Airport Joins H2CanFly Consortium for Sustainable Aviation
Key Ideas
  • Edmonton International Airport (YEG) partners with H2CanFly to advance hydrogen and sustainable aviation technologies, supporting Canada's decarbonization journey and net-zero emissions goals.
  • YEG, located in Edmonton, Alberta, a major hydrogen production region, is expanding its airport-based hydrogen hub to demonstrate and deploy hydrogen technologies in aviation.
  • H2CanFly aims to accelerate hydrogen and electrification technologies in aviation, strengthen infrastructure, and reduce emissions through collaborative efforts with industry, academia, and government.
  • YEG's involvement in H2CanFly will contribute technical expertise, resources, and assets to facilitate the future use of hydrogen-powered aircraft, aligning with Canada's net-zero objectives.
Edmonton Airports, managing Edmonton International Airport (YEG), has announced its partnership with the H2CanFly/H2CanadaEnvol consortium at the Paris Air Show to advance hydrogen and sustainable aviation technologies. YEG, as Canada's largest airport by land size and home to the country's first airport-based hydrogen hub, is strategically joining H2CanFly to support Canada's decarbonization journey and achieve net-zero emissions in aviation. Situated in Edmonton, Alberta, one of the largest hydrogen production regions globally, YEG is actively developing and expanding its airport-based hydrogen hub to demonstrate and deploy hydrogen technologies effectively. By aligning with H2CanFly, a collaborative initiative focusing on accelerating hydrogen and electrification technologies, airport infrastructure, and essential certification pathways, YEG aims to contribute to practical aviation benefits and emission reduction, supporting Canada's net-zero goals. The consortium comprises over 50 partners from the aerospace sector, academia, and government, working on driving infrastructure development, research, and training to accelerate Canada's clean energy and hydrogen aviation future. YEG's involvement will see it serve on H2CanFly's board of directors, collaborating with prominent industry partners like Airbus, CAE, and others to advance sustainable aviation solutions. As a founding member of the Government of Canada's Net-Zero Challenge, YEG is committed to transitioning its operations to net-zero emissions by 2050 or earlier. With a focus on innovation and sustainability, including hydrogen and drone technology, YEG is driving economic prosperity for the Edmonton Metropolitan Region and beyond.
