Edmonton International Airport (YEG) is pioneering hydrogen adoption by partnering with Diesel Tech Industries (DTI) to explore integrating the Guardian Hydrogen Diesel System on its heavy-duty runway snow sweepers. This initiative marks Canada's first airport to explore the adoption of DTI's innovative hydrogen and diesel technology in its fleet, aiming to reduce carbon emissions from ground operations and advance hydrogen adoption in the transportation sector. Funded by Alberta Innovates, the project will retrofit the diesel-operated sweepers to use hydrogen as a supplementary fuel, offering immediate benefits such as reduced emissions, lower diesel consumption, and advanced data tracking for fleet management. The partnership aims to inspire further adoption of hydrogen technology across commercial transportation and energy sectors, showcasing the practical benefits of hydrogen in off-road operations. The project, starting in spring 2025 and taking about a year for completion, will help de-risk hydrogen technology offtake in Alberta, foster innovation in the province's growing hydrogen economy, and contribute to developing a skilled clean energy workforce. This groundbreaking achievement supports Alberta and Canada's decarbonization goals and underscores efforts in fostering a worldwide hydrogen economy.
