The French government has signed a Strategic Contract for the New Energy Systems Sector (CSF NSE) to formalize a strategic roadmap for the sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) sector. The plan, spanning from 2024 to 2027, aims to establish a competitive and sustainable industrial sector for SAF. Key priorities include increasing production capacity, ensuring competitiveness, fostering industrial investment, and launching significant projects before 2030. The objectives for 2030 include achieving autonomy in sustainable aviation fuels by incorporating biofuels and synthetic fuels produced from renewable hydrogen and captured carbon dioxide. To support this, the government plans to facilitate Final Investment Decisions (FID) and strengthen control mechanisms on fuel imports to ensure compliance with sustainability standards. This initiative aligns with the European Union's carbon neutrality goals and the ReFuelEU Aviation regulation, which mandates airlines to increase the share of sustainable fuels in their consumption. France has already initiated the shift towards sustainable aviation fuels with public support for new production projects, aiming to increase the country's synthetic fuel production capacity. The signing of the CSF NSE brings together key players from the industry, government, and institutions to work collectively on developing the sector.
