MagniX and Robinson Helicopter Company have reignited their collaboration to introduce a battery-electric powertrain for the Robinson R66 helicopter by 2026. The partnership's focal point will be MagniX's lightweight Helistorm engines, known for their 165-pound weight, offering a substantial reduction compared to traditional turbine engines. MagniX had previously demonstrated its electric aviation prowess by enabling the first flight of an electric Robinson R44 helicopter in 2022. The company further showcased its technological advancement by accomplishing the world's inaugural piloted flight of a hydrogen-electric helicopter using the R44 platform in March 2025, setting a remarkable milestone. Notably, MagniX has received exclusive airworthiness privileges from the FAA for its electric engine, highlighting its commitment to safety and innovation. The forthcoming retrofit of the R66 will incorporate MagniX's robust Samson batteries, unveiled in 2024, with a capacity to endure over 1,000 full-depth discharge cycles. These cutting-edge batteries are specifically crafted to power helicopters and electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, emphasizing MagniX's dedication to driving sustainability and efficiency in the aviation sector.
