- Moeve and Zaffra sign MoU to develop e-SAF facilities in Southern Spain for European aviation fuel decarbonisation.
- Collaboration aims to meet ReFuelEU Aviation targets, part of the broader Fit for 55 package for greenhouse gas emission reduction.
- Carlos Barrasa of Moeve and Jan Toschka of Zaffra express enthusiasm for partnership in accelerating the energy transition in aviation.
Moeve, formerly Cepsa, and Zaffra, a joint venture between Sasol and Topsoe, have announced an MoU to advance European aviation fuel decarbonisation. This collaboration merges Moeve's expertise as a Spanish supplier of jet fuel, including sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), with Zaffra's technology and asset development proficiency. The partners plan to evaluate the feasibility of establishing e-SAF facilities in Southern Spain, where Moeve is working on the ambitious Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley project.
The primary objective of this partnership is to meet the ReFuelEU Aviation targets, which require at least 6% of aviation fuel at EU airports to be SAF by 2030, including 1.2% of synthetic fuels like e-SAF. These targets are part of the Fit for 55 package, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030 and achieve climate neutrality by 2050.
Carlos Barrasa, Executive VP of Commercial and Clean Energies at Moeve, emphasized the significance of the collaboration, stating that it accelerates the aviation industry's energy transition. The partnership aims to establish Spain's initial e-SAF facilities, supporting the EU's climate objectives and showcasing Moeve's commitment to providing clean, scalable solutions for future flight. Jan Toschka, Zaffra CEO, expressed delight in partnering with Moeve to accelerate aviation industry decarbonisation by developing Spain's first e-SAF plants. The aligned vision and collective strengths of the companies position them as leaders in introducing e-SAF swiftly, sustainably, and at scale.
