OQAE's E-Fuels Hub in Duqm: Pioneering Oman's Green Energy Transition
Key Ideas
  • OQAE is advancing plans to establish an e-fuels hub in Duqm, producing e-Methanol, e-Gasoline, e-SAF, and e-NG using green hydrogen and biogenic carbon dioxide.
  • The initiative aligns with OmanVision 2040 and the Net-Zero 2050 Strategy, positioning Duqm as a global green energy hub and supporting clean energy infrastructure.
  • In addition to the e-fuels pilot, OQ is developing a 10–15 MW green hydrogen demonstration plant and other flagship ventures to drive the use of green hydrogen in various sectors.
  • OQ is exploring opportunities to position Oman as a global bunkering destination for low-carbon fuels and is investing in methanation and carbon utilisation technologies for cleaner fuel production.
OQ Alternative Energy (OQAE), a subsidiary of Oman's OQ energy group, is making significant strides in Oman's energy transition strategy through the establishment of an e-fuels hub in Duqm. This hub, detailed in the OQ Sustainability Report 2024, will focus on producing synthetic fuels like e-Methanol, e-Gasoline, Sustainable Aviation Fuel (e-SAF), and e-NG using green hydrogen and biogenic carbon dioxide. The initiative is part of OQ's efforts to support OmanVision 2040 and the Net-Zero 2050 Strategy by decarbonizing the transportation and industrial sectors. The report emphasizes Duqm's role as a key player in the green hydrogen value chain. OQ is not only working on the e-fuels pilot but is also constructing a green hydrogen demonstration plant in SEZAD. These projects aim to provide operational experience and support future commercial-scale ventures. OQ's energy portfolio in Duqm already includes ventures like HYPORT Duqm and the Green Energy Oman project, enhancing the region's green energy capabilities. The company is keen on demonstrating the technical feasibility of synthetic fuel production to drive demand for green hydrogen in shipping, aviation, and industry. Moreover, OQ is exploring ways to position Oman as a global destination for low-carbon fuels by investing in methanation and carbon utilization technologies. The e-fuels hub is expected to enhance Oman's green hydrogen export capabilities, tapping into international markets through Duqm Port, and solidifying its position in the renewable energy landscape.
