Two Scottish Government-backed agencies, Scottish Enterprise and the Scottish National Investment Bank, have invested a total of £29 million in ZeroAvia, a green aviation firm. The UK Government's National Wealth Fund has also contributed £32 million to the company, which has received £18.5 million in research and development funding since 2019. This investment will lead to the creation of 350 jobs in Scotland's green aviation sector. ZeroAvia is set to build its Hydrogen Centre for Excellence in Renfrewshire, focusing on producing fuel cells for hydrogen-electric engines. The company aims to introduce an engine capable of powering a 20-seat plane by next year, with plans for larger 40-80 seat vehicles in the future. The founder of ZeroAvia, Val Miftakhov, highlighted Scotland's unique advantages in driving the transformation of the aviation industry towards cleaner and more efficient propulsion systems. Scottish First Minister John Swinney praised the investment, emphasizing Scotland's potential to lead in tackling the climate emergency and fostering economic growth through sustainable practices. Scottish Secretary Ian Murray also welcomed the investment, noting its role in supporting Scotland's Net Zero goals and boosting the economy. This collaboration between the Scottish and UK governments showcases a joint effort to promote innovation, manufacturing, and job creation in Scotland's green energy and aviation sectors.
