The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) and the Japan Civil Aviation Bureau (JCAB) have announced a strategic collaboration to address the growing demand for air travel in the Asia Pacific region. The focus areas of this partnership include improving air connectivity, enhancing passenger and cargo flows, and expanding collaboration in airport innovation and technology. One key initiative is the establishment of the International Aviation Lab to drive the development of new airport solutions. Additionally, the two authorities plan to jointly work on the next generation of air traffic flow management, optimize regional air traffic through data analytics, and enhance engagement in runway safety and fatigue risk management. A significant aspect of the collaboration is the exploration of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) feedstocks and production pathways for Asia Pacific. CAAS and JCAB aim to contribute to expanding the supply of fuels eligible for CORSIA by sharing information on feedstocks, production pathways, and certification for regionally produced SAF. This effort includes joint projects on sustainable aviation policy research, SAF accounting, and sustainable aviation financing. Furthermore, the two aviation authorities are working on regulatory requirements and operational concepts for the safe integration of unmanned aircraft systems and eVTOL aircraft technologies. They are also exploring the potential of hydrogen as a future decarbonisation pathway for the region.
