TotalEnergies has revealed its ambitious plans to invest in green hydrogen and sustainable aviation fuel at its petrochemical refining site in Antwerp, Belgium. This strategic move includes phasing out the oldest steam cracker by 2027 due to changing market conditions and excess ethylene supply in Europe. By relying on the newer steam cracker for ethylene supply, the company aims to enhance efficiency and ensure the long-term viability of its integrated platform in Europe. The company's collaboration with Air Liquide for a 200 MW electrolyser project will result in green hydrogen production of around 15,000 tonnes annually, with plans to utilize it at the Antwerp platform, powered by electricity from TotalEnergies' OranjeWind offshore wind farm. This initiative is expected to significantly reduce CO2 emissions by up to 150,000 tonnes per year and align with EU targets for renewable energy consumption. Furthermore, the platform will start producing 50,000 tonnes per year of sustainable aviation fuel from 2025 by utilizing existing refining units for co-processing hydrocarbons and biomass. TotalEnergies is also implementing additional measures like process electrification and a 25 MW/75 MWh battery storage system to support grid balancing and renewable energy integration, showcasing its commitment to sustainability and innovation in the energy sector.
