US green aircraft engine developer ZeroAvia is establishing its Hydrogen Centre of Excellence in Scotland, set to create around 350 jobs. The center, located in Renfrewshire's Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District Scotland, will focus on producing advanced fuel cell systems for hydrogen-electric aero engines. With operations expected to commence by 2028, the project received a £9 million grant from Scottish Enterprise and significant investments from ZeroAvia. ZeroAvia's engines are designed to reduce operating costs for airlines and mitigate aviation's impact on global warming. The company's plans include introducing engines for different aircraft sizes, targeting a multi-billion pound global export market. Scotland's First Minister John Swinney expressed optimism about the project, highlighting Scotland's capabilities in tackling climate change and fostering economic growth. ZeroAvia's founder, Val Miftakhov, praised Scotland's aerospace and engineering skills, the growing hydrogen sector, and the supportive aviation strategy. The company sees Scotland playing a crucial role in the aviation industry's transition towards zero-emission flights, driven by new propulsion systems.
